Tom Goris - Mr Gay Belgique 2013 - Pendant mon enfance, j'ai souffert de harcèlement à cause de mon orientation sexuelle
La Belgique accueillera à Anvers à la fois Mr Gay Monde et les World Out Games. Fraichement élu il y a quelques semaines, voici l'interview de Tom Goris, Mr Gay Belgique 2013.
Benjamin - Peux-tu te présenter en quelques mots ?
Tom Goris - Je suis né le 18 février 1979 et j'ai passé toute ma vie à Tremelo, un petit village. J'ai vécu comme si j'étais dans le domaine où le père Damien est né, un prêtre belge très connu. Dans mon temps libre, je fais du fitness, de la danse israélienne et le week-end, je sors avec des amis. En 2000, année magique, j'ai obtenu mon diplôme de marketing. Je gagne ma vie ces dernières années à la banque BNP Paribas Fortis et depuis septembre dernier, je travaille comme chargé d'assurance à l'assurance AG, la plus importante compagnie d'assurance de Belgique.
Benjamin - Comment as-tu fait ton coming-out ? Quels sont tes conseils pour les jeunes gays ?
Tom Goris - A 17 ans, j'ai dit à ma meilleure amie que j'étais gay. Après une dispute, elle a dit à toute mon école que j'étais gay et cela m'a fait profondément mal. Elle a fait mon coming-out à ma place. Mon conseil aux jeunes gays et qu'ils doivent toujours croire en eux. Aujourd'hui, beaucoup de réseaux sociaux permettent de rencontrer d'autres gays. Cela facilite le coming-out.
Benjamin - Comment es-tu devenu Mr Gay Belgique ? Quels sont tes projets ?
Tom Goris - Tout a commencé ainsi :
Le 4 décembre, j'ai envoyé le mail suivant :
“Bonjour,
Je voudrais m'inscrire pour l'élection Mr Gay Belgique 2013. En plus du fait que mes amis et collègues m'encouragent pour participer à ce concours, il y a une raison encore plus importante qui me motive pour devenir candidat.
Pendant mon enfance, j'ai souffert de harcèlement et en particulier à cause de mon orientation sexuelle. Ces agressions ont laissé des traces dans ma vie. En tant que candidat à cette élection, je veux porter un message contre le harcèlement. On ne parle jamais trop de sujet. Beaucoup de victime du harcèlement sont marquées à vie et certaines personnes en viennent à prendre une décision radicale pour mettre un terme à ces souffrances.
En participant personnellement au concours, ce sera un nouveau départ dans ma vie car je vais rencontrer de nouvelles personnes et découvrir ce monde qui m'est encore inconnu."
L'autre motivation était que les 12 candidats du concours ont tous un message, une personnalité et un objectif. Mr Gay Flandre n'est pas un concours de beauté, il y a d'autres concours pour cela.
Cette participation a boosté ma vie et c'est déjà une belle victoire. L'année dernière, j'étais au bord du suicide, mais j'ai trouvé la force à temps pour continuer et changer autant mentalement que physiquement.
En tant que gagnant de Mr Gay Flandre, je veux lever ma voix contre le harcèlement, la dépression et le suicide. Ces thèmes touchent tout le monde. Ils ont dominé ma vie jusqu'à aujourd'hui et je veux faire quelque chose de positif : Je veux être un modèle portant le message que cela peut toujours revenir. Je veux donner l'inspiration aux gens autour de moi.
Avec tout ce que j'ai enduré, je peux maintenant mieux comprendre les gens et leurs émotions. Cela a aussi contribué à me faire garder les pieds sur terre et rester moi-même peu importe les circonstances. En tant que Mr Gay Flandre, je veux être un modèle pour tous les gays, car ils restent encore trop souvent victimes de harcèlement, dépression et suicide.
Benjamin - Lors du débat sur le mariage pour tous en France, de nombreux médias ont mentionné la Belgique, car de nombreux français allaient se marier en Belgique quand cela n'était pas possible en France. Que faut-il améliorer en Belgique en matière d'égalité des droits ?
Tom Goris - Que faut-il améliorer en Belgique pour l'égalité des droits ?
Je suis fier de vivre en Belgique où nous n'avons pas à nous plaindre en matière d'égalité des droits. La Belgique fut un des premiers pays dans le monde a légalisé le mariage et l'adoption pour tous. Même si la Belgique est un petit pays, mais elle est grande quand elle parle d'égalité. Il y a temps à faire dans ce petit pays pour la communauté LGBT. Mon pays est un exemple pour les autres pays du monde qui n'ont pas encore obtenu l'égalité des droits.
Benjamin - Que signifie l'Europe pour toi ?
Tom Goris - L'Europe pour moi, c'est l'unité et la diversité. Avec la monnaie unique, les pays d'Europe sont connectés. Nous agissons ensemble. L'Europe a une telle diversité culturelle, cela fait de l'Europe un continent très intéressant pour les touristes. La vie gay est également très forte en Europe, même s'il existe encore un fossé important entre l'est et l'ouest de l'Europe. J'espère que l'ouest pourra influencer l'est et promouvoir l'égalité des droits dans ces pays. Ce sera la tâche de nos politiques.
Benjamin - Un dernier mot pour les lecteurs de mon blog ?
Tom Goris - Je veux envoyer un message fort au monde "Quoi qu'il arrive, ayez confiance en vous. Vous avez en vous une force pour vous battre et avancer ! On a qu'une seule vie, ne la gâchez pas."

Benjamin - Can you present yourself in a few words?
Tom Goris - I was born on February 18, 1979 and have lived all my life in a village called Tremelo. I live as it were in the backyard of the birthplace of Father Damien, a famous Belgian priest. My leisure activities include Fitness, Israeli Dance and on the weekends I go out with friends. In the magical year 2000 I graduated in Marketing. My pennies, I gained in recent years at BNP Paribas Fortis Bank and since September last year, I work as Insurance Officer at AG Insurance, the biggest insurance company in Belgium.
Benjamin - How did you came out? What are your advices for the gay youth to come out?
Tom Goris - When I was 17 I told for the first time to my best friend that I was gay. After an argument, she told against all pupils of the school that I was gay and that has deeply get hurt me, so she did my coming out in my place. The advice that I would give the gay youth is that they should believe in themselves. These days there are many social media where they can connect with other gays. This could make things easier to come out.
Benjamin - How did you became Mr. Gay Belgium? What do you stand for?
Tom Goris - How it all began:
On 4 December, I sent the following email:
“Hello,
I would like to register for the Mister Gay Belgium 2013 elections. Apart from the fact that some of my friends and colleagues encouraged me to participate in these elections, there is a much greater reason for me to want to be a contestant.
During my childhood I suffered from severe bullying in general and on account of my sexual orientation in particular. Bullying has left a mark on my life. As a candidate on these elections I would like to raise my voice against bullying. The importance of this subject cannot be overemphasized. Many of the victims of bullying don’t really overcome the effect for the rest of their lives and some even chose to end their lives in order to end the suffering.
Personally taking part in this competition will give me a new lease of life as I may meet new people and discover the great world out there that is still unknown to me.”
Another reason I participated was that it was an election with 12 boys each with a purpose, a personality and a message. Mister Gay Flanders is not a beauty contest there are other elections for this.
My participation gave me a huge boost in my life and that to me is a victory in itself. Last year I had almost committed suicide but found just in time even that strength to continue and I changed physically and mentally.
As the winner of Mister Gay Flanders I want to raise my voice against the themes bullying, depression and suicide. These are issues that could touch everybody. These topics dominate my life so far and I want to do something positive: I want to be a role model with the message that it can turn anytime. I want to inspire people around me.
With everything I've been through, I can now understand people and their feelings better. It has also ensured that I remain at all times down to earth and I will always be myself no matter what happens. As Mister Gay Flanders I want to be a role model for all gay people because they are more often the victims of bullying, depression and suicide.
Benjamin - In the debate about gay marriage in France, many Medias referred to Belgium, as many French were crossing the border to get married in Belgium when it was not possible in France. What needs to be improved in Belgium about equal rights?
Tom Goris - What needs to be improved in Belgium for equal rights?
I am proud that I live in Belgium where we don't have to complain about gay rights. Belgium was one of the first countries in the world that made marriage and adoption for GLBT's legal. Belgium may be a small country but is that big when we talk about gay life. There is so much to do in this small country for LGBT's. My country should be the example for other countries in the world where there is still much to be done about gay rights.
Benjamin - What means Europe for you?
Tom Goris - Europe means for me unity and diversity. With its own currency, the countries in Europe are connected. We act as one. Europe is so diverse in terms of culture. This makes Europe so interesting for tourists from other continents. Gay life is also strong present in Europe but unfortunately the gap in this area is still huge between East and West Europe. I hope that the West can exert a great influence on the east and that we can also boost gay rights unit over time. It will be the task of politicians here to work on these issues.
Benjamin - One last word for my blog readers?
Tom Goris - I want a clear message to be sent to the world “whatever happens – have faith in yourself; There lurks deep within yourself a force to fight and continue! You only have one life. Do not waste it."
