Giulio Spatola - In Italia, se non sei etero, di sesso maschile e cattolico, allora hai un grave problema

Entre le coming-out de Tiziano Ferro et les propos homophobes de Silvio Berlusconi, l'actualité LGBT de l'Italie a été très mouvementée ces derniers mois. Pour autant, la situation est toujours aussi difficile et la route est encore longue pour les droits LGBT. Pour en parler, j'ai posé quelques questions à Giulio Spatola, Mr. Gay Italie 2010. Un garçon très dynamique et très engagé pour faire avancer son pays, un véritable porte parole de la communauté LGBT en Italie.

Between the coming-out of Tiziano Ferro and homophobic remarks of Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's LGBT news has been very busy in recent months. However, the situation is still difficult and the road is long ahead for LGBT rights. To talk about it, I asked a few questions to Giulio Spatola, Mr. Gay Italy 2010. A very dynamic man commited to improve the situation in his country, a real spokesperson for the LGBT community in Italy.

Tra il coming-out di Tiziano Ferro e gli osservazioni omofobiche da Silvio Berlusconi, le news GLBT in Italia solo stato molto impegnato negli ultimi mesi. Tuttavia, la situazione è ancora difficile e la strada è ancora lunga per i diritti GLBT. Per ne parlare, ho rivolto alcune domande a Giulio Spatola, Mr Gay Italia 2010. Un ragazzo molto dinamico e impegnato per far progredire il suo Paese, un portavoce vero per la comunità GLBT in Italia.

J’ai 26 ans et je suis né à Palerme, en Sicile. Depuis 7 ans, j’habite à Rome où j’ai étudié la cinématographie à l’université Sapienza, diplômé le 5 juillet dernier.
Je pense être une personne simple et je crois en les valeurs de la vie. J’ai 2 parents super qui ont appris à m’aimer comme je suis et j’ai 2 frères plus jeunes qui me soutiennent.
Je suis en couple avec un garçon mexicain qui vie en Italie, à Pise. Il s’appelle Oscar et il a 29 ans.
Le cinéma est ma grande passion, notamment la création. En 2008, j’ai réalisé mon premier court-métrage « In Itinere », écrit et dirigé par moi-même. Actuellement, j’attends des financements de la région Sicile pour mon prochain film.
Je suis engagé dans la lutte pour les droits de la communauté LGBT et pour cela, j’ai décidé de participer au concours Mr. Gay Italie 2010. J’espérais pouvoir participer et apporter ma contribution à notre combat, et j’ai réussi.

I am 26yo boy born in Palermo (Sicily). I’ve been living for seven years in Rome, where I moved to study Cinematography at the Sapienza University and where I graduated last July 5.
I consider myself as a simple person and I believe in the values of life. I have 2 wonderful parents who have learned to love me for who I am and 2 little brothers who support me.
I am engaged to a Mexican boy who lives in Italy (Pisa). His name is Oscar and he is 29 years.
I am a movie fan and also a filmmaker. In 2008 I made my first short film entitled "In Itinere” written and directed by me. Now I'm waiting for state funding from the Region of Sicily for my next film.
I strongly believe in the struggle for the rights of the LGBT community and for this reason I decided to participate in the competition for Mr. Gay Italy 2010. I was hoping to win and be able to give my contribution and I did.

Sono un ragazzo di 26 anni, nato a Palermo (Sicilia). Vivo da 7 anni a Roma, dove mi sono trasferito per studiare Cinematografia all’università Sapienza e dove mi sono laureato lo scorso 5 luglio.
Mi ritengo una persona semplice e credo nei valori della vita. Ho 2 splendidi genitori che hanno imparato ad amarmi per quello che sono e 2 fratelli, più piccoli, che mi sostengono.
Sono fidanzato con un ragazzo messicano che vive in Italia (a Pisa), si chiama Oscar ed ha 29 anni.
Sono un appassionato di Cinema e sono anche un filmaker. Nel 2008 ho realizzato il mio primo cortometraggio dal titolo “IN ITINERE”, scritto e diretto da me. Adesso sto aspettando dei finanziamenti statali dalla Regione Sicilia per il mio prossimo film.
Credo molto nella lotta per i diritti della comunità GLBT e per questo motivo ho deciso di partecipare al concorso di Mister Gay Italia 2010. Speravo di vincere e poter dare il mio contributo e ci sono riuscito.

Comment est la vie lorsqu’on est gay en Italie ? Et en Sicile ?
How is life when you're gay in Italy? And in Sicily?
Come è la vita quando sei gay in Italia ? E in Sicilia?

Je dis toujours que si tu es né en Italie et que tu n’es pas hétéro, de sexe masculin et catholique, alors tu auras de graves problèmes. Malheureusement, il est très difficile d’être gay en Italie car il y a beaucoup d’ignorance et peu de culture gay. La télévision montre uniquement des images de gays trop efféminés ou de transsexuels qui se prostituent, ainsi les gens pensent qu’être gay c’est vivre de cette façon. Sans oublier que la présence de l’Etat du Vatican n’aide pas et est notre premier problème. Ensuite, il y a le problème de la classe politique (autant de droite que de gauche) qui n’a pas de considération pour nous, qui promet le PACS, le mariage et l’adoption seulement pour avoir des voix lors des élections et qui oublie ses promesses juste après.

En Sicile, la situation était beaucoup plus difficile avant. Je me souviens quand j'étais plus jeune et que je devais me cacher. Maintenant les choses changent et les Siciliens sont plus ouverts et en avance que certaines régions du nord de l'Italie.
Il suffit de constater qu’à Rome, il y a un taux élevé d'agressions homophobes et Palerme en revanche, il y a de plus en plus de soirées où les hétéro et les homos vivent ensemble en harmonie.
Je suis très fier de mon île.

I always say that if you are born in Italy and you are neither straight, male nor catholic, then you will have serious problems. Unfortunately, being gay in Italy is very difficult because there is so much ignorance and a lack of gay culture. Television shows only images of female gays or prostitutes trans and then people believe that being gay means just that. Moreover, the presence of the Vatican does not help us and is our first problem. There is also the problem of the political class (both right and left) that do not consider us and make us promises of civil partnership, marriages and adoptions only to have the votes in elections and then forget about those promises.

In Sicily, it used to be much more difficult. I remember when I was younger and I had to hide. Now things are changing and the Sicilians are opening their mind long before certain regions of Northern Italy.
Just considering that in Rome there is a high rate of homophobic attacks and in Palermo at the contrary, there are more and more parties where mixed straight and gay men live together in harmony.
I am very proud of my island.

Io dico sempre che se nasci in Italia e non sei ETERO, di SESSO MASCHILE e CATTOLICO allora hai un grave problema. Purtroppo essere gay in Italia è molto difficile perché c’è molta ignoranza e poca cultura omosessuale. La televisione fa vedere solo immagini di gay troppo effeminati o trans che si prostituiscono e quindi la gente crede che essere gay significhi solo quello. Inoltre la presenza dello Stato Vaticano non ci aiuta ed è il nostro primo problema. Poi c’è anche il problema della classe politica (sia di Destra che di Sinistra) che non ci considera e ci fa promesse di PACS, matrimoni e adozioni solo per avere i voti alle elezioni e dopo si dimenticano di quelle promesse.

In Sicilia prima era molto più difficile. Mi ricordo quando ero più piccolo e dovevo nascondermi. Adesso le cose stanno cambiando e i siciliani stanno aprendo la mente molto prima di certe regioni del Nord Italia.
Basta considerare che a Roma c’è un altissimo tasso di aggressioni omofobe e a Palermo invece ci sono sempre più serate miste dove etero e gay convivono serenamente.
Sono orgoglioso della mia isola.

J'ai été en Espagne, à Barcelone, et j’en suis tombé amoureux. Je me souviens avoir été surpris de voir des couples gays plus âgés se promener main dans la main à la Rambla. J'espère que cette sérénité viendra bientôt en Italie.
Je parle un peu anglais, mais pas parfaitement. Je comprends bien l'espagnol, parce que le dialecte sicilien a des influences de cette langue, mais je ne le parle pas.

I was in Spain, Barcelona, and I fall in love with this city. I remember being surprised to see older gay couples walking hand in hand to the Rambla. I hope this peace will come soon in Italy.
I speak a little English but not perfectly. I understand Spanish well because the Sicilian dialect has influences of this language, but I can’t speak it.

Sono stato in Spagna, a Barcelona, e me ne sono innamorato. Ricordo che ero sorpreso di vedere coppie di gay anziani che passeggiavano per la Rambla mano nella mano. Spero che questa serenità arrivi presto anche in Italia.
Parlo un po’ di inglese ma non ancora perfettamente. Lo spagnolo lo capisco bene perché il dialetto siciliano ha influenze di quella lingua, ma non lo so parlare.

Je veux allier ma passion pour le cinéma dans mon engagement social de Mr Gay et faire des films autour des thèmes LGBT pour sensibiliser le public. J'ai aussi l'intention de visiter les écoles et les universités en Italie pour parler aux jeunes comme moi des questions LGBT et de diffuser l'information réelle, autre que celle proposée par la télévision.
Ma priorité est l’avancée des droits LGBT dans les meilleurs délais. Ce n’est pas possible qu'en 2010, mon pays soit encore loin derrière le reste de l'Europe!

I'm going to merge my passion for cinema in my social commitment of Mr. Gay and make movies about LGBT themes to raise awareness. I also plan to tour to schools and universities in Italy to talk to young people like me about LGBT issues and spread real information, other than that proposed by the television.
My priority is the achievement of LGBT rights as soon as possible. It is not possible that in 2010 my country is still well behind the rest of Europe!

Ho intenzione di fondere la mia passione per in Cinema al mio impegno sociale di Mister e realizzare dei film a tematica GLBT che servano a sensibilizzare la gente. Ho anche intenzione di fare un tour per le scuole e le università d’Italia per parlare ai giovani come me di tematiche GLBT e diffondere loro una vera informazione, diversa da quella proposta dalla televisione.
La mia priorità è il raggiungimento dei diritti GLBT il prima possibile. Non è possibile che ancora nel 2010 la mia Nazione sia ancora così indietro rispetto al resto d’Europa!

En France, on parle beaucoup de ce qu’a dit Berlusconi. Quelle peut être la réponse à tant d’homophobie et de vulgarité ?

In Francia, parliamo molto delle parole di Berlusconi. Quale puo essere la risposta giusta a tanti homofobia e vulgarità?

Malheureusement, toutes réponses verbales ou autres réactions ne résoudront pas le problème, mais cela ne doit pas nous décourager. La seule solution est que Berlusconi démissionne et laisse la place à quelqu'un qui peut diriger ce pays mieux que lui. Je suis sûr que Nichi Vendola (président de la région des Pouilles) serait un bon Premier ministre, mais il faut aussi que beaucoup de gens change leur mentalité. Il y a trop d'homophobie dans les maisons italiennes et il faudra beaucoup de temps avant qu'elle ne disparaisse complètement. Nous continuerons jusqu’à ce moment-là!

Unfortunately, any verbal answer or other reactions will not solve the problem but this should not discourage us. The only solution is that Berlusconi resigns and gives his place to someone who can govern this country better than him. I am sure that Nichi Vendola (President of the Puglia region) would be a good Prime Minister but also a lot of people need to change their mentalities. There is too much homophobia in Italian homes and it will take considerable time before it disappears altogether. We do not give up until then!

Purtroppo qualsiasi risposta verbale o reazionaria non risolverà il problema ma questo non deve scoraggiarci. L’unica soluzione è che Berlusconi si dimetta e lasci il posto a qualcuno che sappia governare meglio di lui questo Paese. Sono certo che Nichi Vendola (Presidente della Regione Puglia) sarebbe un ottimo Primo Ministro ma occorre anche che tanta gente cambi la propria mentalità. C’è troppa omofobia nelle case degli italiani e ci vorrà molto tempo prima che questa sparisca del tutto. Noi non ci arrenderemo sino a quel momento!

Che ne pensi del coming out di Tiziano Ferro? 

Je pense que Tiziano a donné un bon exemple aux gens, mais aussi à tous les autres artistes qui restent cachés. J'espère que ce ne restera pas un cas isolé, mais peut-être le premier d'une série d’artistes qui fera son coming-out. Maintenant, j'espère que le prochain sera un athlète, peut-être un joueur.
Ces coming-out nous aide beaucoup pour faire comprendre aux italiens que n’importe qui peut être gay et qui cela ne change pas rien. Un chanteur continuera de faire de grandes chansons et un bon joueur continuera de marquer des buts. Il suffit d’accepter cette simple réalité.

I think Tiziano gave a good example to the people but also to all the other artists that still remain hidden. I hope it will not remain an isolated case but may be the first in a series of celebrities coming out. Now I hope that the next is an athlete, maybe a football player.
These coming-outs would help us a lot, because they can make Italians understand that anyone can be gay and that does not change anything later. A singer will continue to make great songs and a good player will continue to do a lot of goals. We just need to accept this simple reality.

Penso che Tiziano abbia dato un buon esempio alla gente ma anche a tutti gli altri artisti che ancora restano nascosti. Spero che il suo non resti un caso isolato ma possa essere il primo di una serie di coming out della gente dello spettacolo. Adesso spero che il prossimo sia uno sportivo, magari un calciatore.
Questi coming out ci aiuterebbero moltissimo perché servirebbero a far capire agli italiani che essere chiunque può essere gay e che non cambia assolutamente nulla dopo. Un  cantante continuerà a fare belle canzoni e un buon calciatore continuerà a fare molti goal. Si tratta solo di accettare questa semplice realtà.
