Kiri Spanos - Mr Gay Chypre 2012 - Many of the Cypriots are still struggling to accept their sexuality

Un nouveau pays participe à Mr Gay Europe 2012 et nous sommes très heureux d'accueillir la magnifique île de Chypre, qui sera représentée par Kiri Spanos, Mr Gay Chypre. Voici son interview exclusive pour Benjamin, Gay et Européen :

Benjamin – Peux-tu te présenter en quelques mots ? 

Kiri Spanos - Bonjour à tous, mon nom est Kiri Spanos et je suis le candidat cypriote de Mr Gay Europe 2012. J'ai 24 ans et je viens de terminer mes études d'économie/gestion à l'Université de Londres. On dit de moi que je suis une personne très sociable et déterminé, qui se fixe des objectifs pour les atteindre. Mais on dit aussi que je suis très égoïste et sensible, ce qui n'est pas toujours une bonne chose ! J'aime faire de la gym, nager, aller au cinéma et voyager.

Benjamin – Comment as-tu fait ton coming-out ? Comment ont réagit tes proches ? 

Kiri Spanos – Faire son coming-out à Chypre est très difficile. Cela demande beaucoup de courage, de volonté et de soutien de ses proches. Heureusement, j'avais ce soutien dans mon adolescences grâce à mes deux meilleures amies. Ce fut si dur de leur dire que j'étais gay, mais au fond de moi, j'avais besoin d'avoir des gens autour de moi en qui je pouvais faire confiance et parler de mes émotions, sinon j'allais exploser.

Ainsi, j'ai senti que je pouvais faire confiance à ces deux filles et je ne me suis pas trompé. A 14 ans, elles furent les premières personnes à savoir et ne m'ont jamais déçu depuis. Avec les années, j'en parlais de plus en plus à mes amis jusqu'à ce que ce ne soit plus un secret pour tous mes amis. A 19 ans, j'ai décidé d'en parler à ma famille. Je voulais vraiment le dire à ma tante et ma mère en premier, car nous étions très proches et je détestais ce « mur » entre nous, qu'elles ne sachent pas qui je suis vraiment. C'est pourquoi la première à savoir fut ma tante et ensuite ma mère.

Je n'oublierais jamais ce jour si intense et rassurant. Ma tante l'a bien pris car elle s'en doutait. En revanche, ma mère ne l'a pas bien pris au début. Elle n'était pas en colère contre moi, mais elle était triste et un peu déprimée, même si elle s'en doutait aussi. Ce n'est pas facile pour des parents cypriotes de 45 ans d'accepter immédiatement le fait que son enfant est homosexuel. Mais après de nombreuses discussions constructives, elle l'a accepté assez vite et m'a témoigné encore plus d'amour, cela m'a beaucoup touché. La plupart de mes proches ont bien réagit en disant qu'ils m'aimaient et que cela ne changera jamais.

La seule personne qui l'a mal pris fut mon père. Il est la dernière personne à l'avoir su car nous ne voulions pas lui dire pour plusieurs raisons. Il était en colère après moi, mais au final ça allait. J'avais le soutien du reste de ma famille, ce qui l'a aidé à comprendre plus facilement. Aujourd'hui, tout va bien et je suis heureux que tout le monde connaisse le vrai Kiri. Bien sûr, il y aura toujours des gens pour lancer des rumeurs à mes parents, mais je n'y accorde pas d'attention. Je suis heureux que ma famille m'accepte, m'aime et me soutiennent comme je suis.

Benjamin – Quelles sont tes motivations pour Mr Gay Europe?

Kiri Spanos – Ma motivation principale est de prouver aux Cypriotes qu'ils ne doivent pas avoir honte de ce qu'ils sont. Nous devons réagir et nous battre pour nos droits dans ce pays conservateur pour un meilleur futur, pour nous et pour les nouvelles générations. Nous devons croire en nous et vivre notre sexualité sans que personne ne puisse nous provoquer, agresser ou discriminer. C'est pourquoi je suis avec tous ces gens qui souffrent et n'ont personne à qui faire confiance et parler, comme j'ai eu la chance d'avoir dans ma vie. Mon projet est de populariser la participation de Chypre au concours, afin que les médias et la société de Chypre puisse voir que leur nation fait parti du concours et que cela devienne, espérons le, une plate-forme pour les Chypriotes et qu'ils commencent à accepter la communauté LGBT.

Benjamin – Comment est la situation pour les LGBT à Chypre, que faut-il améliorer ?

Kiri Spanos – La situation pour les LGBT à Chypre est très rude comme l'est notre société avec une forte influence de l'église grecque orthodoxe en plus des politiciens conservateurs, ainsi qu'un manque d'éducation à la sexualité. La conséquence est que notre société vit cachée. Il n'est pas surprenant d'avoir une société aussi conservative quand les évêques parlent aux médias des homosexuels et les décrivent comme des malades que le seul remède est la croyance en dieu.

Mais même récemment, voir un politicien dire aux médias que l'homosexualité est illégale à Chypre, alors qu'elle est devenue légale en 2012. Et cela parce qu'en 1998, la demande de Chypre de rejoindre l'Europe a été rejetée en partie à cause de la loi anti-homosexualité. Les politiciens ont été forcés de modifier cette loi pour rejoindre l'Union Européenne.

Comme vous pouvez le constater, la situation à Chypre n'est pas terrible et être gay est très difficile ici, avec beaucoup de Chypriotes qui n'arrivent pas à accepter leur sexualité. Je suis convaincu que beaucoup est à faire et que les gens doivent se rassembler pour combattre ensemble et créer un environnement ouvert à Chypre pour les gays. Ils est important de dire qu'il n'y a jamais eu de pride à Chypre, car les gays chypriotes ont peur de se montrer. Nous sommes une petite société de 750 000 habitants et les gens se connaissent un peu tous plus ou moins. Le plus urgent est d'exprimer et d'accepter ce que nous sommes pour être capable de montrer et expliquer que nous ne sommes pas malades, nous sommes comme tout le monde. C'est essentiel, car pouvoir aimer et être fier de sa sexualité permet de faire que les gens nous acceptent comme nous sommes, en voyant que nous ne sommes pas si différents. Il faut dire que ces dernières années, de plus en plus de personnes font leur coming-out et de plus en plus d'hétéros commencent à accepter. Nous sommes très loin de l'Europe de l'ouest, mais c'est un pas dans la bonne direction. Il faut le poursuivre.

Je suis déjà en contact avec l'association LGBT de Chypre « Accept » et je les vois la semaine prochaine pour commencer à travailler ensemble et organiser la première pride de Chypre en juin prochain. Comme il n'y a jamais eu de pride à Chypre, ce sera un moment important pour la société LGBT de l'île si nous arrivons à organiser cette marche.

Benjamin – Que signifie l'Europe pour toi ? Actuellement, Chypre tient la présidence tournante de l'UE, qu'en penses-tu ?

Kiri Spanos – En tant qu'économiste, l'Europe signifie pour moi la croissance et la prospérité. Mais ces derniers années avec la crise, la prospérité n'est pas vraiment d'actualité. Mais l'Europe c'est pour moi l'union des plusieurs nations différentes mais avec des sociétés similaires pour devenir un ensemble fort dans la mondialisation. Et le fait que ma petite île puisse avoir la présidence de l'UE pour les six prochains mois m'inspire beaucoup et me rend très fier car un si petit pays peut avoir une si grande responsabilité. Cela m'inspire aussi que c'est le bon moment pour nous faire entendre en Europe. L'un des objectifs de la présidence chypriote de l'UE est d'améliorer la parité homme femme et lutter contre les discriminations. Il y a une grande différence entre les hommes et les femmes à des postes importants et le gouvernement de Chypre veut améliorer cette situation de 40 % d'ici 2020. Cela m'inspire qu'il ne faut pas s'intéresser qu'à la parité, mais à tout type de discrimination, par exemple sur l'orientation sexuelle ou le racisme.

Benjamin – Un dernier mot pour les lecteurs de mon blog ?

Kiri Spanos – Je voudrais merci aux lecteurs d'avoir lu ces quelques mots en espérant que vous avez pu me connaître un peu mieux, et connaître mieux mon pays. A new country is participating to the Mr Gay Europe 2012 and we are very glad to welcome the beautiful island Cyprus, which will be represented by Kiri Spanos, Mr Gay Cyprus. Here is his exclusive interview on Benjamin, Gay et Européen :

Benjamin - Can you present yourself in a few words? 

Kiri Spanos - Bonjour à tous, mon nom est Kiri Spanos and I am the Cypriot delegate in the Mr Gay Europe 2012. I am 24 years old and I just finished studying economics and management in London Metropolitan University. One of my main characteristics is that I am a very social person and determined as far as setting goals because I like to always achieve them. Though I am also very selfish and quite sensitive which is not always a good thing! I love training in the gym, swimming, cinema and traveling.

Benjamin - How did you come out? How did your relatives react? 

Kiri Spanos - Coming out in Cyprus is very hard. It needs a lot of courage, determination and also support from your loved ones. Thankfully I had that support in my early teen years from my two best friends at that time. It was so hard for me to tell them that I was gay but deep inside of me, I wanted to have some people as a young teenager whom I could trust and share with them my different experiences and feelings I had with boys. I am the kind of person who does not like hiding personal feelings, this was gonna make me explode.

Therefore, I felt that I could trust those two girls and I was not wrong. At the age of 14, they were the first people who found out about me and never disappointed me since then. All that years I was telling it to more and more friends until I was completely out to all of my friends. At the age of 19, I decided to come out to my relatives. I really wanted to say it to my aunt and my mum first, whom I felt really close and I was hating this 'wall' surrounding us, of not knowing for sure my true ME. Therefore the first to find out was my aunt and after a few weeks I told it to my mum too.

I will never forget that day because it was so intense and full of reliefe from my side. My aunt took it fine as she was suspecting it but my mum did not take it very well at first. She did not get angry with me of course. She just got sad and a bit depressed, although she was suspecting it too. It is not very easy for a 45 year old Cypriot parent to accept immediately the fact his son or daughter is homosexual. Having said that, after many productive conversations we had, explaining to her what I was going through, she accepted it quickly and showed me more love as she never did before and I feel blessed for that. Most of my relatives reacted fine as well by saying to me that they love me either way and this will not change their feelings towards me.

The only person reacted negatively was my dad. He was the last to find out because me and my relatives were hiding it from him for different reasons. He got a bit angry with me but nothing major in the end. I had all support from the rest of my family, that therefore helped him understand some things easily. Now it is all fine and I am completely out and satisfied that everyone knows the real Kiri. Of course there are always people and relatives who like to gossip and spread negative words to my parents but personaly I do not give any attention to them. I am glad my family accepts, loves and supports me the way I am.

Benjamin – What are your motivations for Mr Gay Europe? What do you stand for? 

Kiri Spanos - My main motivation for the competition is to prove Cypriots that we should not be ashamed of what we are. We should rise up and be able to fight for our rights in this conservative country for a better future, for us and for the newer generations to come. We have to believe in our selfs and embrace our sexuality and do and not let anyone harass, bully or discriminate us. Therefore I stand for those people that are suffering and do not have anyone to trust and talk to, like I had in my life. I stand for those people because I have been through the same things so I know how it feels to live under this circumstances. My project is to manage to make this participation of Cyprus to the competition as much as popular I can to the Cypriot media so that the whole society can see that our nation is taking part in such competition and hopefully it will act as a platform to more people in the Cypriot society to start becoming more acceptable to the LGBT society.

Benjamin - How would you describe the lgbt situation in Cyprus, what needs to be improved? 

Kiri Spanos - The lgbt situation in Cyprus is pretty rough as our society, with the strong influence of the Greek orthodox church in addition with the conservative politicians, lucks behind of certain education concerning sex and sexuality. As a result, our society lives inside the closet. It is very normal to have such a conservative society when you see the bishops and archbishop talk to the media about homosexuals and describe it as a sickness that the only cure to it is to have faith in God.

But also recently to watch a very famous politician talking to the media for homosexuality being illegal in Cyprus where it has been legalized in Cyprus since 2002. And all that, because in 1998 Cyprus had been rejected to join the EUand one of the reasons was because of the law that enforced homosexual act as illegal. Therefore the politicians were forced to change the law in order to enter in the European union.

As you can tell by yourselfs, the situation in Cyprus is not that great, and being gay is very hard, with many of the Cypriots still struggling to accept their sexuality. In my opinion I strongly believe that many things need to be done and lots of people need to come together and fight in order to create a better environment for us to live In Cyprus us gays. It is very important to mention that in Cyprus there has never been a protest or demonstration for gay rights. This is because most gays are afraid to come out and let people see that they are gays. It is a very close society, with a population of 750 000 and therefore all people pretty much know each other. Therefore the most important thing that needs to be done firstly, is us Cypriots to be able to express and accept our selfs to the maximum and be able to show and explain people that we do not have any sickness and that we are just like them. This is very crucial, because by being able to love and be proud of out sexuality, we can slowly and easily make people love us too by the way we are, by showing them that we are all the same and have nothing differen from them. It is very important to mention that in the recent years, more and more people are coming out and gradually many straight people are beginning to accept. We do lack behind though from western Europe still, but I believe that we are on the right way. It just need to push a little bit more.

I'm already in contacts with the Cypriot organisation that protects the lgbt rights in Cyprus ACCEPT and I'm meeting with them next week on my planned trip to Cyprus and I would like to try together and create our first Cyprus gay pride next June. There has neverbeen a gay pride in Cyprus and therefore if we manage to create this successfully, it can be very beneficial for the Cypriot LGBT society for the near future.

Benjamin - What means Europe for you? Cyprus is currently running the eu presidency, what does it inspire you? 

Kiri Spanos - As an economist, for me Europe means growth and prosperity. Recently though, with the current economic crisis, the years we are currently, are are not prosper at all. Also Europe for me, means unite different nations, with similar cultures and societies together and all become a big powerfull unity with regards to globalisation. The fact that my small country is having the presidency of the eu for the next six months inspires me and makes me feel proud because such a small country is having this great responsibility. What inspires me though is that this could be the right time for us and for our voice to be heard more in Europe. One of the main objectives of Cyprus for its EU presidency is to help improve the gender discrimination we have in Cyprus. There is a huge difference gap of more men than women working in important possitions and therefore the cypriot government is trying to increase that by 40% by 2020. Therefore this is an inspiration to me to show Europe that we are concern not only about gender discrimination but also to every kind of discrimination, for example sexuality and racial discrimination.

Benjamin - μπορείς να παρουσιάσεις τον εαυτό σου με λίγες λέξεις?

Kiri Spanos - Bonjour a tous, mon mon est Kiri Spanos και είμαι ο εκπρόσωπος της Kυπρou στον διαγωνισμό mr Gay Ευrope 2012. Είμαι 24 χρονών και μόλις έχω ολοκληρώσει τις σπουδές μου στον κλάδο οικονομίκων και διοίκησης επιχηρησεων στο London Metropolitan University. Ένα από τα κύρια χαρακτηριστικά μου είναι ότι είμαι ένα πολύ κοινωνικό άτομο και αποφασιστικος, όσο αφορα τον καθορισμό των στόχων, επειδή μου αρέσει να επιτυχανω στουs στοχουs μου. Αν και είμαι επίσης πολύ εγωιστηs και αρκετά ευαίσθητος που δυστηχοs δεν είναι πάντα ένα καλό. Λατρεύω να περναω τιs ωρεs μου στο γυμναστηριο αλλα και η κολιμβιση. Επίσης μου αρέσει ο κινηματογράφος αλλα και τα ταξίδια.

Benjamin - Πως βγήκες έξω σαν ομοφυλοφίλος; Πως αντέδρασαν οι συγγενείς σου?

Kiri Spanos - Βγαίνοντας στην Κύπρο είναι πολύ δύσκολο. Χρειάζεται πολύ θάρρος, αποφασιστικότητα και επίσης, την υποστήριξη από τους αγαπημένους σου. Ευτυχώς είχα τη στήριξη στις αρχές τηs εφηβικής μου ηλικιαs από τις δύο καλύτερες μου φίλεs. Ήταν τόσο δύσκολο για μένα να τους πω ότι είμαι ομοφυλόφιλος, αλλά βαθιά μέσα μου ήθελα να έχω μερικούς ανθρώπους σαν έφηβος , τουs oποίουs θα μπορούσα να εμπιστευθώ και να μοιραστω μαζί τους διαφορετικές εμπειρίες αλλα και τα συναισθήματά μου που είχα για τα αγόρια. Είμαι ατόμο που δεν κρύβεται, κυρίως για τα προσωπικά μου ζητηματα. Συνεπώς, ένιωσα ότι θα μπορούσα να εμπιστευτώ τα δύο κορίτσια και δεν ήμουν λάθος. Στην ηλικία των 14 ήταν οι πρώτοι άνθρωποι που ανακάλυψαν για μένα και ποτέ δεν με απογοήτευσαν από τότε. Σιγα σιγα άρχισα να λέω σε όλο και περισσότερους φίλους μου σε σημειο που ήμουν εντελώς ανοιχτοs σε όλους μου τους φίλους. Στην ηλικία των 19 αποφάσισα να βγω και στους συγγενείς μου. Ήθελα πολύ να το πω στη θεία μου και τη μαμά μου πρώτα, τιs οποίεs ενιωθα πολύ κοντά μου και δεν αντεχα αυτό το «τείχος» που μας περιβάλλε, που δεν γνωρίζαν με βεβαιότητα τον αληθινό μου Εαυτό. Συνεπώς, η πρώτη που το είχα πει ήταν η θεία μου και μετά από μερικές εβδομάδες το είπα και στη μαμά μου. Δεν θα ξεχάσω ποτέ εκείνη την ημέρα γιατί ήταν τόσο έντονη και γεμάτη ανακούφιση από την πλευρά μου. Η θεία μου το πήρε πολύ χαλαρά έχοντας βέβαια την υποψία από πριν, αλλά η μαμά μου δεν το ειχε πάρει πολύ καλά στην αρχή. Δεν είχε θυμώσει μαζί μου φυσικά. Απλά στενοχωρήθηκε ειχε λίγο κατάθλιψη, αν και είχε την υποψία επίσης. Δεν είναι πολύ εύκολο για έναν 45 ετών γονέα στην κύπρο να δεχθεί αμέσως το γεγονός ο γιος ή η κόρη του είναι ομοφυλόφιλος. Τούτου λεχθέντος, μετά από πολλές παραγωγικές συνομιλίες που είχαμε, εξηγώντας της αυτα που περνούσα εκείνο το καιρο, το αποδέχτηκε γρήγορα και μου έδειξε περισσότερη αγάπη απο ποτέ και νιώθω ευλογημένος γι 'αυτό. Οι περισσότεροι από τους συγγενείς μου αντέδρασαν ψυχραιμα λέγοντας μου οτι αυτό δεν θα αλλάξει τα συναισθήματά τους προς εμένα. Το μόνο πρόσωπο που αντέδρασε αρνητικά ήταν ο μπαμπάς μου. Ήταν ο τελευταίος που εμάθε γιατί εγώ και οι συγγενείς μου του το κρύβαμε για διάφορους λόγους. Οταν το έμαθε ήταν λίγο θυμωμένος μαζί μου, αλλά τίποτα σημαντικό στο τέλος. Είχα όλη την υποστήριξη από την υπόλοιπη οικογένειά μου, που ως εκ τούτου τον βοήθησε να καταλάβει κάποια πράγματα πιο εύκολα. Τώρα είναι όλα μια χαρακαι είμαι εντελώς ικανοποιημένος που ο καθένας ξέρει τον πραγματικό Kiri. Φυσικά υπάρχουν πάντα οι άνθρωποι και οι συγγενείς που τους αρέσει να κουτσομπολεύουν και να διαδίδουν αρνητικα λογια στους γονείς μου, αλλά προσωπικα δεν δίνω καμία σημασία σε αυτά. Χαίρομαι που με δέχεται η οικογένειά μου, με αγαπά και με στηρίζει για αυτό που είμαι.

Benjamin - Ποια είναι τα κυνιτρα σου για τον θεσμό me gay Europe; Ποιους αντιπροσωπείς; Ποιες είναι οι βλέπεις σου?

Kiri Spanos - Κύριο κίνητρό μου για το διαγωνισμό είναι να αποδείξω στουs Κύπριoυs οτι δεν πρέπει να ντρέπομαστε για αυτό που είμαστε. Θα πρέπει να ξεσηκωθούμε και να είμαστε σε θέση να αγωνιστούμε για τα δικαιώματά μας σε αυτή τη συντηρητική χώρα για ένα καλύτερο μέλλον για μας και για τις νεότερες γενιές που θα έρθουν. Πρέπει να πιστέψουμε στους εαυτούς μας, να αγκαλιάσουμε τη σεξουαλικότητά μας και να μην αφήνουμε κανένα να μαs μοιωνει και να μας παρενοχλει. Συνεπώς, στέκομαι για εκείνους τους ανθρώπους που υποφέρουν και δεν έχουν κανέναν να εμπιστευτούν και να μιλήσουν, όπως είχα στη ζωή μου. Στέκομαι για εκείνους τους ανθρώπους, επειδή έχω περάσει τα ίδια πράγματα έτσι ξέρω πώς είναι να ζεις κάτω από αυτεs τιs συνθήκες. Το έργο μου είναι να καταφέρω , αυτή τη συμμετέχη μου τηs Κύπρου να την προώθησω όσο μπορω στα κυπριακά μέσα ενημέρωσης, έτσι ώστε ολόκληρη η κοινωνία να δει ότι η χώρα μας συμμετέχει σε ένα τέτοιο διαγωνισμό και ελπίζω ότι θα λειτουργήσει ως πλατφόρμα για να δουν οι ανθρωποι στην κυπριακή κοινωνία πως υπάρχουμε και εμείς και δεν έχουμε καμοια διάφορα μεταξύ μας. Και με την ελπίδα, να αρχίσει ο κόσμος όλο και περισσότερο να ειναι πιο αποδεκτικοs στουs ομοφιλοφιλουs.

Benjamin - Πως θα περιγραφές την λαοτ κοινωνία στην Κύπρο; Τι πρέπει να βελτιωθεί?

Kiri Spanos - Η κατάσταση των ΛΟΑΤ στην Κύπρο είναι αρκετά τραχιά και η κοινωνία μας, με την ισχυρή επιρροή της ελληνικής ορθόδοξης εκκλησίας σε συνδυασμό με τουs συντηρητιkουs πολιτικούς ειναι αρκετα πίσω όσο αφορά την εκπαίδευση σχετικά με το σεξ και τη σεξουαλικότητα. Είναι πολύ φυσιολογικό να υπάρχει μια τέτοια συντηρητική κοινωνία όταν βλέπεις τους επισκόπους και τον αρχιεπίσκοπο να αναφέρει στα μέσα ενημέρωσης για ομοφυλόφιλους και να τουs περιγράφουν ως μια ασθένεια και ότι η μόνη θεραπεία που εχουν, είναι να έχουν πίστη στο Θεό. Αλλά και πρόσφατα, πολύ γνωστός πολιτικός ανάφερε στα μέσα ενημέρωσης οτι η ομοφυλοφιλία είναι παράνομη στην Κύπρο, όπου έχει νομιμοποιηθεί στην Κύπρο από το 2002. Και όλα αυτά, επειδή το 1998 η Κύπρος είχε απορριφθεί για ενταξη τηs στην EE kαι ένας από τους λόγους ήταν, λόγω της νομοθεσίας που επιβάλλε την ομοφυλοφιλική πράξη ως παράνομη. Συνεπώς, οι πολιτικοί αναγκάστηκαν να αλλάξουν το νόμο, προκειμένου να εισέλθει η Κύπρος στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση. Όπως μπορείτε να δείτε και οι ιδιοι, η κατάσταση στην Κύπρο δεν είναι πολύ καλη, και να είσαι ομοφυλόφιλος είναι πολύ σκληρό. Επίσης πολλοί Κύπριοι εξακολουθούν να δυσκολεύονται να αποδεχθούν τη σεξουαλικότητά τους. Κατά τη γνώμη μου, πιστεύω ακράδαντα ότι πολλά πράγματα πρέπει να γίνουν και πολλά οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να ενωθούν και να πολεμήσουν για να δημιουργήθει ένα καλύτερο περιβάλλον για εμάς Αυτό είναι επειδή οι περισσότεροι ομοφυλόφιλοι φοβούνται να βγουν εξω και να δειξουν στην κοινονια ότι είναι ομοφυλόφιλοι. Είναι μια πολύ στενή κοινωνία, με πληθυσμό 750.000 και ως εκ τούτου όλοι οι άνθρωποι λίγο πολύ γνωρίζονται μεταξύ τους. Συνεπώς, το πιο σημαντικό πράγμα που πρέπει να γίνει κατ 'αρχάς, είναι οι Κύπριοι να μπορέσουν να εκφράστουν ελευθερα και να αποδεχθούν στο μέγιστο τον εαυτό τους αλλά και να είναι σε θέση να μπορουν να εξηγήσουν στους ανθρώπους γυρο τουs ότι δεν έχουμε καμία ασθένεια και ότι είμαστε ακριβώς όπως oloυs τουs αλλουs ανθρωπουs. Αυτό είναι πολύ σημαντικό, διότι με το να ειμαστε σε θέση να αγαπάμε και είμαστε υπερήφανοι για τη σεξουαλικότητά μαs, τουε μπορούμε σιγά-σιγά και εύκολα να κάνουμε τους ανθρώπους να μας αγαπούν από τον τρόπο που είμαστε, δείχνοντάς τους ότι είμαστε όλοι το ίδιο και δεν έχουμε Διαφορεs μεταξυ μαs. Είναι πολύ σημαντικό να αναφέρουμε ότι τα τελευταία χρόνια, όλο και περισσότεροι άνθρωποι βγαίνουν σταδιακά και πολλοί άνθρωποι αρχίζουν να αποδέχονται. Παρόλο που είμαστε πίσω, πιστεύω πως βαδίζουμε στο σωστό δρόμο.

Benjamin - Τι σημάνει Ευρώπη για σένα; Η Κύπρος αυτή τη στιγμή κατέχει την προεδρία της ΕΕ. Τι σε εμπνέει σε αυτό?

Kiri Spanos - Ως οικονομολόγος, για μένα η Ευρώπη σημαίνει ανάπτυξη και ευημερία. Πρόσφατα όμως, με την τρέχουσα οικονομική κρίση, τα χρόνια που ζουμε σήμερα, δεν είναι καθόλου ευημερεs. Επίσης, η Ευρώπη για μένα, σημαίνει ενώση με διαφορετικά έθνη, με παρόμοιες κουλτούρες και πολιτισμούς σαν στοχο να γίνουμε μια μεγάλη ισχυρη ενότητα. Το γεγονός ότι η μικρή μου χώρα έχει την προεδρία της ΕΕ για τους επόμενουςηη έξι μήνες με εμπνέει και με κάνει να νιώθω περήφανος γιατί μια τόσο μικρή χώρα έχει αυτή τη μεγάλη ευθύνη. Αυτό που με εμπνέει όμως περισσοτερο είναι ότι αυτό θα μπορούσε να είναι η κατάλληλη στιγμή για εμάς, να ακουστεί η φωνη μαs περισσότερο στην Ευρώπη. Ένας από τους κύριους στόχους της ΕΕ για την Κύπριακη προεδρία, είναι να βοηθήσει στη βελτίωση της διάκρισης των δύο φύλων που έχουμε στην Κύπρο. Υπάρχει ένα τεράστιο χάσμα διαφοράs οπου, περισσότεροι άνδρες παρά γυναίκες δουλευουν σε θέσεις κλειδιά και επομένως η κυπριακή κυβέρνηση προσπαθεί να αυξήσει την υπαρξη γυναικων σε αφτεs τιs θεσειs κατά 40% μέχρι το 2020. Συνεπώς, αυτή είναι μια έμπνευση για μένα να δείξουμαι στην Ευρώπη ότι είμαστε συνυδιτοπιοιμενοι, όχι μόνο για τις διακρίσεις των φύλων αλλά και για κάθε είδους διακρίσεων, για παράδειγμα, τη σεξουαλικότητα και τις φυλετικές διακρίσεις.
