Steven Baitson - Mr Gay Ireland - Always Remember Who You Are, Be true to yourself

Et c'est à présent l'Irlande qui vient d'élire son nouveau Mr. Gay ! Voici l'interview de Steven Baitson, Mr Gay Irlande 2012 et le plus jeune Mr Gay du concours irlandais.

Ireland just elected its new Mr Gay! Here is the interview of Steven Baitson, Mr Gay Ireland 2012 and the youngest ever Mr Gay winner in the Irish contest.

Benjamin – Peux tu te présenter en quelques mots ?

Can you present yourself in a few words?

Steven Baitson -  Je m’appelle Steven Baitson. J’ai 21 ans et j’habite à Dublin en Irlande depuis que je suis né. Je suis coiffeur professionnel et également un danseur champion du monde. Je danse depuis que j’ai 5 ans et ça me plait toujours aujourd’hui. J’aime la mode et je suis toujours heureux d’avoir de nouveaux habits, lol.

My name is Steven Baitson. I am 21 years old and live in Dublin Ireland and have lived here all my life. I am a fully qualified hairdresser. I am also a world champion dancer. I have been dancing from the age of 5 and still love doing it to this day. I love fashion and new clothes always make me happy lol 

Benjamin- Comment as-tu fait ton coming-out ? Comment ont réagi tes proches ?

How did you came out? How did your friends/family react?

Steven Baitson – J’en ai parlé à mes meilleurs amis un an avant d’en parler à ma famille. J’avais vraiment peur d’en parler à mes parents comme tout autre jeune gay de mon âge. Mais mon histoire est assez amusante. J’avais 16 ans et je sortais avec un garçon. C’était mon premier amour et je voulais que mes parents le rencontrent. J’ai envoyé un sms à ma mère en disant « Maman, je suis gay et j’ai un copain, ok ? », elle a répondu « C’est cool. Qu’est-ce que je te rapporte comme plat du resto chinois ? ».

Lorsqu’elle est rentrée à la maison, elle m’a dit qu’elle avait toujours su et que je n’étais pas différent des autres. J’avais peur d’en parler avec mon père, car il est très macho, ainsi ma mère est allée lui parler et il n’y a pas eu de problème. Il m’a envoyé un message rigolo après que ma mère lui en ai parlé. Après mon coming out avec ma famille, nous sommes devenus plus proches et il y a une super ambiance à la maison maintenant.

Pour mon coming-out auprès de mes autres amis, ils m’ont tous dit « Steven, on le savait déjà – C’est honnête de nous l’avoir dit et nous sommes fiers que tu ais eu le courage d’en parler ».

I told my close friends about a year before I told my family. I was really scared to tell my parents as any other young gay lad would be. But my story is quite funny. I was 16 years of age and was going out with a guy. He was my first love so I really wanted my parents to meet him. So I sent my Mam a text message (sms) that said "Mam I'm Gay and I have a boyfriend ok?" and she texted back "Thats great. What would you like from the Chinese take away?".

She then told me when I got home from work that she always knew but its ok I'm no different then anyone else. I was scared to tell my Dad as he is a 'man's man' so my Mam told him and he was fine with it. He sent me a funny message after my Mam told him. With coming out to every one in my family, it has brought us all a lot closer and we get on like a 'house on fire' now.

As for the rest of my friends, when I told them, all they just said was "Steven we all knew already - fair play to you for saying it to us and we look up to you for having the courage to come out".

Benjamin – Pour quelles raisons as-tu candidaté pour M. Gay Irlande ? Quelles sont tes projets et motivations ?

For what reasons did you candidate to Mr. Gay Ireland? What are your projects and motivations?

Steven Baitson – J’ai participle à Mr Gay Irlande car je veux être un modèle pour les autres gays ici, afin qu’ils aient une personne à regarder et vers qui se tourner s’ils ont besoin d’aide. Ma philosophie : « N’oublie jamais qui tu es et ne change jamais peu importe les circonstances, soit toi-même ». Je représente une boite de nuit hétéro « The Wright Venue » à Dublin. Je veux montrer aux gens que si vous êtes gay ou hétéro, vous pouvez aller où vous voulez et vous amuser sans aucun soucis.

I entered Mr Gay Ireland as I want to be a role model for other gay people that are out there, so they have someone to look up to and turn to, when they want advice. I live by the motto "Always Remember Who You Are, And NEVER Change Who You Are, No Matter What - BE True To Your Self". I represented 'The Wright Venue' in Swords, Co. Dublin, which is a straight night club. So I want to let people know that it doesn't matter if you are gay/straight, you can go out anywhere and enjoy your self and not worry about anything.

Benjamin – Est-ce que tu vas participer à Mr Gay Europe / Mr Gay Monde ?

Will you participate to Mr Gay Europe / Mr Gay World?

Steven Baitson – Oui, je vais participer à Mr Gay Europe / Mr Gay Monde et j’ai vraiment hâte de rencontrer tout le monde et faire la fierté de l’Irlande.

Yes I will participate in Mr Gay Europe/Mr Gay World and I am really looking forward to meet everyone else and hope I do Ireland proud.

Benjamin – As-tu beaucoup voyagé en Europe ? Quelles langues parles-tu ?

Have you travelled a lot in Europe? What languages do you speak?

Steven Baitson – J’ai visité plusieurs pays d’Europe (Royaume-Uni, Espagne, Portugal, France, Italie, Norvège, Suède). Je parle anglais et irlandais.

Yes I have been to quite a few countries throughout Europe (England,Spain,Portugal,France,Italy,Norway,Sweden).I speak English and Irish.
